PVC Tarpaulin Fabric: Properties, Uses and How to Choose

PVC tarpaulin fabric is a strong, waterproof material used to make car tarps, trailer covers, canopies, protective curtains, covers and other tarpaulin products. It combines flexibility, wear resistance and resistance to regular mechanical loads, making it suitable both for private needs and for serial production and industrial use.

Techno Tent Plus has worked with PVC fabrics for over 20 years and uses them in our own production. Hands-on experience helps us judge a material not only by the manufacturer's spec sheet, but by how it behaves during cutting, welding and everyday use.

When choosing fabric, we take into account the product's purpose, load, operating conditions, density, coating type and lacquering.

Where PVC Tarpaulin Fabric Is Used

Reinforced PVC fabric is used to make products that need waterproof protection and resistance to regular mechanical loads. It is used in transport, construction, agriculture, industry and private households.

ConstructionProtective tarps, scaffolding enclosures, covers for equipment, tools and building materials.
AgricultureCovers for crops, feed, fertilizer and farm machinery, tarpaulin elements for hangars, and flexible tanks for water storage and irrigation.
TransportCar tarps and covers for trucks, trailers, semi-trailers, pickups, truck beds and other vehicles.
Canopies and coversTarpaulin structures for production and storage sites, retail outlets, outdoor venues and recreation areas.
Transport bags and protective coversBags for transporting equipment and machinery, as well as protective covers for generators, machine tools, tools, and covers for garden furniture.
Sports and special productsCovers for sports mats, ring covers, soft modules, inflatable structures and industrial shells.

For flexible tanks, inflatable structures and other hermetic products, PVC fabric is selected separately — based on purpose, strength, elasticity, tightness, coating type and joining method.

Which PVC Fabric Density to Choose

Density affects the material's weight, thickness and flexibility, but it isn't the only indicator of strength. Coating type, lacquering, tear resistance and low-temperature performance also matter when choosing.

1 Lightweight PVC Fabric 440 g/m² — a light, flexible material for seasonal covers, protective covers, curtains and products that need to be folded or carried often. Suitable for moderate loads.
2 PVC Fabric 630 g/m² — a versatile material for car tarps, trailer covers, canopies, curtains and protective covers built for regular use. The catalogue offers both standard unlacquered fabric and lacquered PVC fabric.
3 Heavy-Duty PVC Fabric 900 g/m² PANAMA — a dense material for industrial and special-purpose products operating under increased mechanical loads. This fabric makes sense wherever reinforced construction and high wear resistance are the priority, and extra weight isn't a concern.

Not sure which PVC fabric is right for you? Tell us the product's purpose, its dimensions, fastening method and operating conditions — we'll help compare materials and choose the best option without paying extra for unnecessary density.

Key Characteristics of PVC Fabric

Tarpaulin PVC fabric consists of a strong polyester mesh coated with a layer of PVC. The reinforced base provides resistance to stretching and tearing, while the PVC coating protects the material from water, moisture and dirt. Density, cold resistance, strength, surface type and other characteristics depend on the specific type of fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions About PVC Fabric

Can I buy less than a full roll of PVC fabric?+
Yes. Most in-stock items are sold by the cut from 1 linear metre. You can also order a full roll or a wholesale batch. Standard roll length depends on the type of fabric and is usually 50 or 60 linear metres.
What colours are in stock?+
Our in-stock range includes grey, anthracite, black, blue, green, khaki, brown and other colours. The available palette depends on density, canvas width, surface type and current batch. Tell us the parameters and quantity you need — we'll check current stock and suggest the available options.
Which PVC fabric density should I choose?+
For light covers, seasonal shelters and products that need to be folded or carried often, 440–450 g/m² is usually the right choice. For car tarps, trailer covers, curtains, canopies and covers used regularly, 630–680 g/m² is most often suitable. 900 g/m² fabric is used for reinforced industrial and special-purpose structures.

The final choice depends not only on density, but also on the product's dimensions, tension, wind and mechanical load, fastening method and operating conditions.
What widths does PVC fabric come in?+
Depending on the type and density of the material, roll width ranges from 1.5 to 3.2 m. The most common widths are 1.5, 2.5, 2.7, 3 and 3.2 m. Please confirm the availability of the width you need before ordering, as it depends on the specific item and batch.
How do I calculate how much PVC fabric I need?+
If you're buying fabric by the cut, first choose the appropriate roll width, then determine the number of linear metres you need. The area of material is calculated using the formula: roll width × number of linear metres = fabric area in m². For example, 5 linear metres of fabric that is 2.5 m wide equals 12.5 m² of material.

For making a finished tarp, the fabric required is not calculated from its area alone. You also need to account for the cutting layout, roll width, hemmed edges, flaps, overlaps, pockets, reinforcements and other structural elements. As a result, actual fabric consumption is often greater than the area of the finished product.
Can I order fabric with custom characteristics?+
Yes. Based on an agreed technical specification, we can arrange production and supply of PVC fabric with the required density, width and colour, a matte or glossy surface, a lacquered coating, the necessary cold resistance, UV protection, or other special properties.

Production feasibility, minimum batch, price and delivery timeline are determined by the plant separately after reviewing the specification.
Does regular tarpaulin fabric work for water tanks?+
No. For making flexible tanks, we use a special PVC fabric designed for hermetic products. It has the appropriate strength, elasticity, coating adhesion, and suitability for hermetic welding.

If you manufacture such products professionally, we can discuss supplying material to your technical requirements. For private use or a finished project, we recommend ordering the tank directly from us: we'll make it to the required volume, size, shape and colour according to an agreed specification.
What documents can I get for procurement or a tender?+
For legal entities and sole proprietors, we issue invoices, delivery notes and, if needed, supply contracts. Quality certificates, technical data sheets and other manufacturer documentation are provided, where available, for the specific material.

If your procurement or tender requires specific technical parameters or a defined list of documents, send us the requirements before placing the order. We'll check the fabric's compliance and whether each document can be provided.
How do you deliver orders to other cities?+
Fabric cuts and small orders are shipped by courier services across Ukraine. For rolls and large batches, we choose the shipping method based on length, weight and dimensions. Delivery terms, timeline and cost are agreed before dispatch.

Describe your task — we'll select the right PVC fabric and prepare a quote.
